VALIDATION OF A HEATING SYSTEM IN THE FARROWING HOUSE USING A CFD APPROACH REA
Damasceno,Flávio A.; Oliveira,Carlos E. A.; Saraz,Jairo A. O.; Schiassi,Leonardo; Oliveira,Jofran L. de.
ABSTRACT The current heating system for piglets in the farrowing usually uses incandescent lamps and, in some cases, heated floors with electric resistances, which in most cases generates a high energy cost. Thus, the implantation of systems that use renewable energies in the heating of piglets can allow the thermal comfort of the animals without reducing the productive development. The objective of this research was to evaluate a computer model in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), which predicts surface temperature in the heating system of a farrowing house. The study was conducted during the summer season on the swine sector of Federal University of Lavras, Brazil. For this study, a prototype solar heater using alternative materials (ASWH) was...

THE USE OF VOCALIZATION SIGNALS TO ESTIMATE THE LEVEL OF PAIN IN PIGLETS REA
Cordeiro,Alexandra F. da S.; Nääs,Irenilza de A.; Baracho,Marta dos S.; Jacob,Flávia G.; Moura,Daniella J. de.
ABSTRACT Pain is considered a condition that most affect the welfare of animals and its measurement is seen as a difficult task. This research aimed to determine the level of pain in pigs by their vocalization. It was recorded the vocalizations of 20 male piglets under normal circumstances (I), marking by Australian method (II), tail trimming management (III), and castration (IV). A unidirectional microphone and a digital recorder were used to record the sound signals. The results suggested that Pitch frequency (Hz), the maximum amplitude (Pa), and intensity (dB) increased from pain-free pigs to the marking procedure; and from marking to both tail trimming and castration The tail trimming and castration vocal response did not differ.

POTENTIAL OF REDUCTION IN THE EMISSION OF METHANE AND NITROUS OXIDE FROM SWINE WASTEWATER AFTER TREATED BY TWO DIFFERENT SYSTEMS REA
Inoue,Keles R. A.; Souza,Cecília De F.; Matos,Antonio T.; Sousa,Marilú S.; Vieira,Maria De F. A..
ABSTRACT Swine wastewater have high pollution load, requiring treatment before its disposal into the environment. Methane (CH4) potentially emitted for such waste is considered 21 times more polluting than Carbon dioxide (CO2), and the nitrous oxide (N2O) is considered 310 times. In this way, projects of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and energy use related to the CH4 are worldwide diffused. It was evaluated the potential greenhouse gas emissions in the influent and effluent from digesters and stabilization ponds used to treat the swine wastewaters in two commercial farms operating in full cycle, located in the municipality of Oratorios-MG, Brazil. Using the methodology “AM0006” to estimate the average potential of greenhouse gases, it was...

The impact of evaporative cooling on the thermoregulation and sensible heat loss of sows during farrowing REA
Justino,Eliene; Nääs,Irenilza de A.; Carvalho,Thayla M. R.; Neves,Diego P.; Salgado,Douglas D'Alessandro.
Pigs are more sensitive to high environmental temperatures explained by the inability of sweating and panting properly when compared to other species of farmed livestock. The evaporative cooling system might favor the thermal comfort of animals during exposure to extreme environmental heat and reduce the harmful effects of heat stress. The purpose of this study was to assess the sensible heat loss and thermoregulation parameters from lactating sows during summer submitted to two different acclimatization systems: natural and evaporative cooling. The experiment was carried out in a commercial farm with 72 lactating sows. The ambient variables (temperature, relative humidity and air velocity) and sows physiological parameters (rectal temperature, surface...

ELECTRICITY GENERATION FROM BIOGAS ON SWINE FARM CONSIDERING THE REGULATION OF DISTRIBUTED ENERGY GENERATION IN BRAZIL: A CASE STUDY FOR MINAS GERAIS REA
Antônio,Adriano da S.; Oliveira Filho,Delly; Silva,Samuel C. da.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to analyze the feasibility of using agricultural waste from a swine farm to produce biogas, which can be used to generate electricity. For this purpose, the waste production potential was evaluated to determine the biogas production capacity of the farm. This measurement allowed scaling the size of the generator used to the electricity production to meet the needs of the farm as well as surplus electricity. The surplus electricity may be used on the farm when the generator is under maintenance or the electricity consumption is larger than the energy generated. This process is regulated by Normative Resolutions 482 and 687 in Brazil. The results of the analysis of the net present value, internal return rate, payback...

Physiological evaluation of heat stress in gestating sows under different housing systems in bedding and concrete floor REA
Nunes,Maria L. A.; Miranda,Késia O. da S.; Faria,João M. B. A. de; Vieira,Afrânio M. C.; Arcaro Júnior,Irineu.
The purpose of this paper was to observe the use of bedding (wood shavings) in physiological variables that indicate thermal stress in gestating sows. The experiment was conducted in order to evaluate the effect of two types of floor (concrete and wood shavings). Worse microclimatic conditions were observed in bedding systems (P<0.05), with an increase in temperature and enthalpy of 1.14 ºC and 2.37 kJ.kg dry air-1, respectively. The floor temperature at the dirty area was higher in the bedding presence in comparison to its absence. In spite of the worse microclimatic conditions in the bedding, the rectal temperature did not differ significantly (P>0.05) but the skin surface temperature was higher in the bedding systems. The same occurred with...

Association between G316A growth hormone polymorphism and economic traits in pigs Genet. Mol. Biol.
Faria,Danielle Assis de; Guimarães,Simone Eliza Facioni; Lopes,Paulo Sávio; Pires,Aldrin Vieira; Paiva,Samuel Rezende; Sollero,Bruna Pena; Wenceslau,Amauri Arias.
The association between G316A growth hormone polymorphism and quantitative traits was investigated in an F2 population of pigs. Association analyses were performed using a statistical model that included genotype, sex, batch and sex by genotype interaction as fixed effects and sire as random effect. The polymorphism was associated with the number of right teats (p = 0.03), heart weight (p = 0.04), lung weight (p = 0.05), carcass length determined by the Brazilian carcass classification method (p = 0.04), picnic shoulder weight (p = 0.07), jowl weight (p = 0.01), pH 24 h after slaughtering (p = 0.03) and drip loss (p = 0.01). Interaction between genotype and sex was observed for six performance traits. The additive effect was significant (p < 0.10) for...

Gonçalves,Iara Denise Vasconcellos; Gonçalves,Paulo Bayard Dias; Silva,Janandra Cortese da; Portela Jr,Valério Valdetar; Borges,Luiz Felipe Kruel; Oliveira,João Francisco Coelho; Lovatto,Paulo Alberto.
The aim of the present study was to investigate the association of the estrogen receptor (ER-PvuII) and retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4-MspI) gene polymorphisms and their interactions with prolificacy in a commercial synthetic pig line reared in Brazil. A total of 10,374 piglet records from 218 sows and 817 litters were used for litter size analysis. Only females with three or four farrowings were included in the analysis. The mean litter size ranged from 5.0 to 19.5 piglets. DNA was extracted from leukocytes by a standard method, and ER-PvuII and RBP4-MspI polymorphisms were characterized by the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) technique. The association between alleles or genotypes and reproductive performance...

Effect of growth hormone on fatty acid synthase gene expression in porcine adipose tissue cultures Genet. Mol. Biol.
José,Andrea A.F.B.V.; Alvares,Lúcia. E.; Delgado,Eduardo F.; Coutinho,Luiz L.; Lanna,Dante P.D..
We describe an efficient in vitro assay to test growth hormone effects on mRNA levels and fatty acid synthase (FAS, EC. 2.3.1.85) activity. Swine adipose tissue explants were long-term cultured in medium containing growth hormone and FAS mRNA levels and enzyme activity were measured. We quantified FAS transcripts by competitive reverse transcriptase PCR (RT-PCR) using total RNA from cultured adipose tissue explants and RT-PCR standard-curves were constructed using a cloned 307 bp segment of native FAS cDNA and a shorter fragment from which a 64 bp (competitor, 243 bp) internal sequence had been deleted. A known amount of competitor was added to each PCR as an internal control and µ-actin transcripts were also measured to correct for differences in total...
